We have received many enquiries as to our progress and it seemed easiest to update everyone with a further blog.
Throughout our stay in Malawi our day and night guards had provided a never ending stream of interesting situations and challenges. Sometimes it was difficult to help without taking over or imposing a dependency. We could hardly leave without another issue cropping up. We had all our possessions packed, or given away, and all that belonged to VSO accounted for when another challenging situation cropped up.
We had given each of the guards a financial bonus when it came from James that he would be repaying a loan to one of the other guards. I probed a little and it all came out. The loan was one of a series made to his ‘colleagues’, and to some of the other guards in the area, all of which required repayment of the capital plus 50% interest after one month! What happened if payment was not made wasn’t clear. This guard had even asked our neighbour for an advance of his monthly salary, interest free of course, in order to lend money to others at this exorbitant rate of interest. The situation is totally illegal but as James said ‘what else are people to do, where else can we go for help?’ It was accepted that this was his ‘other job’ and that was what he did to supplement his income as a guard. The banks are unwilling to provide loans to those who have such low incomes, and with no collateral.
I asked why they had not come to us for help and was told they were ashamed and that we had already done too much for them. I suppose that would be dependency but that has to be better than 50% monthly interest!
Our journey home was tedious but uneventful. We flew directly to Scotland, directly that is if via Lusaka, Addis Abba, Rome and Heathrow counts as direct! We were met at the airport in Glasgow and stayed with John and Mary for the weekend before moving into a rented cottage for a week. For some little while Celia had been having periods of irregular heartbeat, or atrial fibrillation, which could not be investigated locally in Malawi. Whilst she did have an attack of malaria neither this nor bilharzia normally present like this and other investigations were just not available.
She saw the Cardiologist on Monday after we arrived home and a number of investigations were initiated. Gradually all the results have come in and it is great to ibe able to report that nothing abnormal has come to light. It has been suggested that this was a complication of the antimalarial prophylaxis she was taking – the one that didn’t work! There has been no suggestion that she still has malaria or bilharzia. She has had no further problems for the last few weeks so let’s hope that is the end of the matter.
We regain access and will be moving back into our own home in mid February. We have been leading a rather itinerant life. We have been invited to the wedding in India of the son of a doctor friend of mine. So we have taken the opportunity to go to India for a few weeks and will be returning just in time to move back into our own home. We are really looking forward to that. It’s been an interesting, challenging year and we have learnt a great deal both about the world and ourselves.
Thank you all for the support and care we have received
Love from us both
Eric and Celia

Hi,
I'm glad Celia is well-- and you have safely returned, only this morning we were wondering when the next update would arrive.
We have news as well: I've accepted the post of Professor of Paediatric Dentistry at Kings College, London and start on 1st April (auspicious date eh?). I'm glad you will be back before I leave- we'll miss our lovely Dunrowan. (the Hoseys)

Glad to hear that Celia is well and that your travels will continue in some form.
Your tales from Malawi have been very entertaining over the last year and like the other bloggers i will miss your regular tales. If you both do decide to travel further how about setting up another blog site to regale us with your stories. It certainly brightens up a dull day in Paisley.
Take care and enjoy India
Love

I remember hearing a speaker talk about how women are meant to nurture their young, while men are meant to provide the stable and secure environment necessary for that nurturing to take place. ,
